AT&T, Verizon look to further squeeze subscribers as earnings soar

AT&T noted record smartphone sales when it posted a monster holiday quarter to close out 2011, and the carrier came back in the first quarter this year with another record-setting report that beat Wall Street’s profit expectations.  Verizon Wireless reported record revenue growth in the fourth quarter  last year, and profits were up 16% in the first quarter of 2012  compared to the same quarter in 2011. But despite soaring performance, executives at both carriers confirmed to investors this week that they are preparing to make new moves in an effort to squeeze more revenue out of subscribers.

FCC approves AT&T spectrum transfer to T-Mobile

Following AT&T’s failed attempt to acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom for $39 billion, AT&T had to pay a lofty break-up fee as per the terms of its agreement. AT&T’s related expenses totaled $4 billion, and included in that sum was the transfer of AWS spectrum licenses to T-Mobile in 128 different markets

Samsung details Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades for American carriers

Samsung has published a list detailing which carrier variants of its phones and tablets will be blessed with Android Ice Cream Sandwich. While Sprint’s Nexus S 4G is already enjoying the latest Android OS, the update will also arrive on the Now Network’s Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. From Verizon, both the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7.7 will get the upgrade, accompanied by the WiFi variants of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and the Galaxy Tab 8.9

AT&T posts better-than-expected profit in Q1, sells record 5.5 million smartphones

AT&T on Tuesday reported its results for the first quarter of 2012. Following a record holiday quarter that saw the nation’s No.2 carrier pull in $0.42 per share excluding one-time charges on sales of $32.5 billion, analysts were expecting first-quarter EPS of $0.57 on revenue totaling $31.85 billion. The company beat expectations, posting a profit of $0.60 per share on in-line sales of $31.8 billion. AT&T activated 3.6 million iPhones during  the first quarter last year , and that number climbed to 4.3 million in the first quarter of 2012, down seasonally from a record 7.6 million during  the holiday quarter .

Nokia makes Lumia 900 free to all AT&T customers, now through April 21st

Now through April 21st, any AT&T customer who purchases a Lumia 900 will receive a $100 rebate from Nokia — effectively making the device free. The move is ostensibly a goodwill gesture from the Finnish manufacturer, which confirmed that a small number of early Lumia 900 handsets shipped from the factory with faulty software that caused memory management issues. It insists this problem is now fixed, and that come April 16th, all affected consumers may swap their device at any AT&T store or merely download the update

PSA: AT&T now unlocking out-of-contract iPhones

In case you’ve been living under a rock (or enjoying the weekend holidays), AT&T on Friday revealed its plans to start unlocking out-of-contract iPhones . However, customers looking to take advantage of the deal will have to meet a few requirements first, which include having an account in good standing (so pay those past due fees before inquiring), a fulfilled contract, paid an early termination fee or that a handset upgrade was done.
